What Nagios could not give them
Nagios is a capable check scheduler and it has kept a great many estates running for a very long time. What it does not do is give you depth. It tells you that a check passed or failed, which is a different thing from telling you what the machine was actually doing at the time.

The selection criteria were per-second real-time granularity, predictable cost, and open source with data sovereignty. In a regulated lending business the third is not an ideological preference. Where operational data lives, who can read it, and what leaves the estate are all questions with compliance answers attached, and a monitoring choice that avoids raising them is worth something on its own.
Retiring the old system outright is the part worth noting. Migrations of this kind usually stall halfway: the replacement goes in, the legacy tool stays running because something still depends on it, and the team ends up maintaining two systems permanently. Here Nagios came out.

Alert accuracy is the one worth pausing on. On a thousand-node estate, an alerting system that is merely noisy is not a nuisance, it is a liability. Every false alarm spends attention that a real incident will later need, and a team that has learned to discount its alerts has effectively turned them off while still paying to run them.
