Netdata vs Grafana Tempo

Distributed Tracing Without Assembling Another Stack

Grafana Tempo stores traces cheaply in object storage, and to use it well you also run Grafana for the UI and a metrics and logs backend next to it. Netdata ingests OpenTelemetry traces on the same agent that already collects per-second metrics and logs, stores every span on your own infrastructure, and shows them in the Traces tab beside the nodes they ran on.

Distributed Tracing Without Assembling Another Stack product interface

Why Teams Running Tempo Look at Netdata

Same OpenTelemetry instrumentation, one agent instead of a stack

One Agent, Three Signals

The Netdata Agent that collects your metrics and logs also receives, stores and serves traces. No distributors, ingesters, queriers or compactors to run, and no separate metrics and logs backends to pair them with.

Spans Stay on Your Infrastructure

Spans are written to the receiving agent’s own disk. Trace data is not stored in Netdata Cloud, which only brokers access, the same way it does for metrics and logs.

Object Storage When You Want It

Netdata has its own trace retention by size, age and file count, and can offload trace files to S3-compatible object storage, reading them back transparently when you query.

Every Trace on a Duration Heatmap

The Traces tab plots every trace over time by duration, with error spans in red. Click a cell to narrow the trace list, then open the full waterfall and every span attribute.

No Query Language to Learn

Filter by service, span name and minimum duration, then click through to the waterfall. Tempo’s TraceQL is more expressive; Netdata is built for point-and-click investigation.

Per-Second Infrastructure Context

Traces sit in the same Netdata Cloud UI as per-second metrics and logs for the same nodes, collected by the same agent from 800+ integrations.

Netdata vs Grafana Tempo

Where the two tracing approaches differ, including what you would give up by switching

Capability

Netdata

Grafana Tempo

Signals covered

✅ Metrics, logs and traces
One agent per node for all three

⚠️ Traces only
Usually paired with Mimir or Prometheus and Loki

Trace ingestion

✅ OTLP/gRPC
From any OpenTelemetry SDK or Collector; OTLP/HTTP via a Collector for now

✅ OTLP gRPC and HTTP
Plus Jaeger and Zipkin formats

Span storage

✅ On the receiving agent
Own retention settings, optional S3-compatible offload with read-back

✅ Object storage
S3, GCS or Azure Blob as the durable store

Indexing and search

✅ Every span indexed
Filter by service, span name and minimum duration

✅ TraceQL
Structural queries over spans and attributes

Trace views

✅ Heatmap, waterfall, span details
Plus volume, error spans and p50/p95/p99 charts

✅ Through Grafana
Trace view in Explore and Grafana’s traces drilldown

Service graphs and span metrics

❌ Not available
No service map or RED metrics derived from spans

✅ Metrics-generator
Writes span metrics and service graph metrics to a Prometheus-compatible backend

User interface

✅ Traces tab in Netdata Cloud
Requires a Netdata Cloud sign-in

⚠️ Requires Grafana
Tempo has no UI of its own

Infrastructure context

✅ Same UI, same nodes
Per-second metrics and logs next to the Traces tab

⚠️ Via linked data sources
Trace-to-logs and trace-to-metrics links once Loki and Prometheus or Mimir are configured

Deployment

✅ Enable OTLP on agents you run
No extra services to operate

⚠️ Monolithic or microservices mode
Distributor, ingester, querier, compactor and object storage at scale

Querying many nodes

⚠️ Per receiving agent
Centralize by pointing senders or a Collector gateway at one Agent or Parent

✅ One central store
Multi-tenant by design

Managed option

✅ Netdata Cloud
Brokers access; traces stay on your agents

✅ Grafana Cloud Traces
Hosted Tempo; trace data stored by Grafana Labs

Secure ingestion

✅ TLS and mutual TLS
Multi-tenant isolation on the OTLP endpoint

✅ TLS and tenant IDs
Multi-tenancy via the X-Scope-OrgID header

What Changes When Traces Move Into Netdata

One Agent Instead of an LGTM Assembly

A typical Tempo deployment is one part of a larger picture: Tempo for traces, Mimir or Prometheus for metrics, Loki for logs, Grafana to see any of it, and object storage underneath. Netdata collects metrics and logs and receives traces on the same agent, so there is one thing to install, upgrade and watch.

One Agent Instead of an LGTM Assembly

Find Slow Requests Without Writing a Query

TraceQL is powerful when you know what to ask. Netdata starts from the other end: a duration heatmap of every trace over time, error spans in red. Click the cell where latency jumped and the trace list narrows to those requests, filtered further by service, span name or minimum duration.

Find Slow Requests Without Writing a Query

Every Span Indexed, Stored Where You Run It

Netdata indexes span names, kinds, statuses and span, resource, scope, event and link attributes, plus a trace-ID index for whole-trace lookup. Spans live on the receiving agent’s disk with their own retention, and older trace files can be offloaded to S3-compatible storage and read back when you query.

Infrastructure in the Same Place as Traces

With Tempo, getting from a trace to the node behind it depends on how well Loki and your metrics backend are wired into Grafana. Netdata already has per-second metrics and logs for the same nodes, in the same Netdata Cloud UI, without data source configuration.
