Netdata vs Jaeger

Traces Next to the Metrics and Logs That Explain Them

Jaeger is a proven tracing backend, and running it means running its collectors and a storage cluster of your choice. Netdata ingests OpenTelemetry traces on the same agent that already collects per-second metrics and logs, stores every span on your own infrastructure, and shows them in the Traces tab next to the nodes they ran on.

Traces Next to the Metrics and Logs That Explain Them product interface

Why Teams Running Jaeger Look at Netdata

Same OpenTelemetry instrumentation, fewer systems to operate

One Agent, Three Signals

The Netdata Agent that collects your metrics and logs also receives, stores and serves traces. There is no separate collector tier, query service or tracing backend to deploy.

Spans Stay on Your Infrastructure

Spans are written to the receiving agent’s own disk. Trace data is not stored in Netdata Cloud, which only brokers access, the same way it does for metrics and logs.

No Storage Cluster to Run

Jaeger in production means sizing and operating Cassandra, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch. Netdata keeps traces in its own storage with retention by size, age and file count, plus optional offload to S3-compatible object storage.

Every Trace on a Duration Heatmap

The Traces tab plots every trace over time by duration, with error spans in red. Click a cell to narrow the trace list, then open the full waterfall and every span attribute.

Per-Second Infrastructure Context

Traces sit in the same Netdata Cloud UI as per-second metrics and logs for the same nodes, so a slow span and a saturated disk are one tab apart instead of one tool apart.

AI Access to Traces

Netdata AI and the Netdata MCP server let AI assistants query and investigate traces alongside metrics, logs and alerts.

Capability

Netdata

Jaeger

Signals covered

✅ Metrics, logs and traces
One agent per node for all three

⚠️ Traces only
Metrics and logs need separate systems

Trace ingestion

✅ OTLP/gRPC
From any OpenTelemetry SDK or Collector; OTLP/HTTP via a Collector for now

✅ OTLP gRPC and HTTP
Plus legacy Jaeger and Zipkin formats

Span storage

✅ On the receiving agent
Own retention settings, optional S3-compatible offload

⚠️ Bring your own backend
Cassandra, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch in production; Badger or memory for small setups

Indexing and search

✅ Every span indexed
Filter by service, span name and minimum duration

✅ Search by tags and trace ID
Service, operation, tag and duration-range queries

Trace views

✅ Heatmap, waterfall, span details
Plus volume, error spans and p50/p95/p99 charts

✅ Timeline and graph views
Plus side-by-side trace comparison

Service dependency graph

Sampling

✅ Stores every span it accepts
Sampling, if any, is set in your SDK or Collector

✅ Remote and adaptive sampling
Sampling strategies served to SDKs and Collectors

Infrastructure context

✅ Same UI, same nodes
Per-second metrics and logs next to the Traces tab

❌ Not in scope
Infrastructure lives in another tool

Deployment

✅ Enable OTLP on agents you run
No extra services to operate

Where traces are explored

⚠️ Netdata Cloud

✅ Self-hosted UI
Runs fully inside your network

Querying many nodes

⚠️ Per receiving agent
Centralize by pointing senders or a Collector gateway at one Agent or Parent

✅ One central store
All services queried together

Secure ingestion

✅ TLS and mutual TLS
Multi-tenant isolation on the OTLP endpoint

✅ TLS supported
Configured per receiver and storage backend

What Changes When Traces Move Into Netdata

Stop Operating a Storage Cluster for Spans

Jaeger’s own documentation points production users at Cassandra, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, and those clusters need capacity planning, upgrades and on-call. Netdata writes spans to the agent’s disk with retention by size, age and file count, separate from metrics and logs, and can offload older trace files to S3-compatible storage that it reads back when you query.

Stop Operating a Storage Cluster for Spans

See Slow Requests Before You Search for Them

Jaeger starts with a search form. Netdata starts with a duration heatmap of every trace over time, with error spans in red. Click the cell where latency jumped and the trace list narrows to exactly those requests.

Follow a Request Across Every Service

Open any trace for the full waterfall: every span across every service, in order, with timing, span kind and errors highlighted. Keep the Infrastructure in the Same Place

A slow span is often a slow node: CPU steal, a full disk queue, a container hitting its memory limit. Netdata already collects those per second from 800+ integrations on the same nodes, so the Metrics and Logs tabs sit next to the Traces tab instead of in a separate stack.
