DNS Server
DNS Server
Plugin: windows.plugin Module: PerflibDNS
Overview
Monitor DNS Server query traffic, recursion, zone transfers, dynamic updates, memory, response handling, and WINS lookups on Windows.
It reads DNS Server performance counters from Windows Perflib.
This collector is only supported on the following platforms:
- windows
This collector only supports collecting metrics from a single instance of this integration.
Default Behavior
Auto-Detection
This collector is enabled by default and checks for DNS Server counters on every collection. Once Windows registers the counters, DNS Server charts appear on the next collection if the DNS Server service is running.
Limits
The default configuration for this integration does not impose any limits on data collection.
Performance Impact
The default configuration for this integration is not expected to impose a significant performance impact on the system.
Setup
Prerequisites
DNS Server role
Install the Windows DNS Server role and run its service so Windows exposes the DNS performance object.
Configuration

via File
The configuration file name for this integration is netdata.conf.
Configuration for this specific integration is located in the [plugin:windows:PerflibDNS] section within that file.
The file format is a modified INI syntax. The general structure is:
[section1]
option1 = some value
option2 = some other value
[section2]
option3 = some third value
You can edit the configuration file using the edit-config script from the
Netdata config directory.
cd /etc/netdata 2>/dev/null || cd /opt/netdata/etc/netdata
sudo ./edit-config netdata.conf

Metrics
Metrics grouped by scope.
The scope defines the instance that the metric belongs to. An instance is uniquely identified by a set of labels.
DNS Server event counters are running totals, displayed as per-second rates. Missing counters leave gaps. Query-drop totals and individual reasons are separate, non-stacked dimensions. Suppressed responses and recursive send timeouts have separate charts and units.
Per DNS Server
Aggregate counters from the DNS Server performance object on the host.
This scope has no labels.
Metrics:
| Metric | Description | Dimensions | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| windows.dns.queries | DNS queries received | tcp, udp | queries/s |
| windows.dns.responses | DNS responses sent | tcp, udp | responses/s |
| windows.dns.query_handling | DNS queries dropped | dropped_total, dropped_policy, dropped_rate_limiting, dropped_send, dropped_bad_socket | queries/s |
| windows.dns.suppressed_responses | DNS responses suppressed | suppressed | responses/s |
| windows.dns.remote_queries | DNS remote queries in flight | in_flight | queries |
| windows.dns.recursive_queries | DNS recursive queries | queries, failures | queries/s |
| windows.dns.recursive_send_timeouts | DNS recursive send timeouts | timeouts | timeouts/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_requests_received | DNS zone transfer requests received | axfr, ixfr | requests/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_requests_sent | DNS zone transfer requests sent | axfr, ixfr, soa | requests/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_responses_received | DNS zone transfer responses received | axfr, ixfr | responses/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_success_received | DNS zone transfers completed on secondary | axfr, ixfr_tcp, ixfr_udp | transfers/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_success_sent | DNS zone transfers completed on primary | axfr, ixfr | transfers/s |
| windows.dns.zone_transfer_failures | DNS zone transfer failures | failures | failures/s |
| windows.dns.notify_received | DNS notifications received | received | notifications/s |
| windows.dns.notify_sent | DNS notifications sent | sent | notifications/s |
| windows.dns.dynamic_updates | DNS dynamic update events | no_operation, written, rejected, timed_out, secure_received, secure_failure | updates/s |
| windows.dns.dynamic_updates_queued | DNS dynamic updates queued | queued | updates |
| windows.dns.memory_used | DNS server memory used | caching, database_node, nbstat, record_flow, tcp_message, udp_message | bytes |
