Buyer’s Guide - October 2026

The 10 best Prometheus alternatives in 2027

Prometheus earned its place as the cloud-native metrics standard, but short local retention, high-cardinality pain and a metrics-only model push teams to look elsewhere. This ranking covers all three escape routes: PromQL-compatible long-term stores, fully managed platforms and unified open-source suites. We grade each on PromQL compatibility, scale, operational burden and what actually makes the bill grow.

The 10 best Prometheus alternatives in 2027 product interface

Why this list exists

Prometheus is the CNCF-graduated, pull-based metrics system that became the default for cloud-native infrastructure: it scrapes HTTP endpoints on an interval, stores time series on local disk, evaluates PromQL alert rules, and plugs into thousands of exporters and every Grafana install. It is genuinely good at that job. The reasons teams leave are just as well documented: default local retention is short with no built-in HA or long-term storage, high-cardinality series from Kubernetes fleets degrade it, horizontal scale requires add-on projects like Thanos, Cortex or Mimir, and it only does metrics, so logs and traces stay separate problems. For a head-to-head on one of the common replacements, see our detailed Netdata vs Prometheus comparison.

What you give up by moving depends entirely on where you land. Leave for an agent-based or OpenTelemetry-only platform and you lose the exporter ecosystem and pull-based discovery. Leave PromQL and you lose a large shared library of community dashboards, recording rules and runbooks. Move to a proprietary SaaS and you leave the vendor-neutral governance model. That is why “Prometheus alternatives” is really three different categories wearing one name: PromQL-compatible long-term stores (VictoriaMetrics, Mimir, Thanos) that keep your scrape setup and add scale and retention; managed platforms (Datadog, New Relic, Chronosphere) that remove the operational burden; and unified open-source suites (SigNoz, OpenObserve, Netdata) that bundle metrics with logs and traces.

Three dimensions decide which of those shapes is right for you:

  1. How much of your PromQL estate must survive. If years of dashboards, recording rules and alert rules are the investment, shortlist only PromQL-compatible backends. If you are starting fresh, the field opens up.
  2. Who operates it. Self-hosting any of these is real work: object storage, compactors, queriers, ClickHouse clusters. Managed options trade that labor for usage-based bills that grow on different axes.
  3. Whether metrics are enough. Prometheus is metrics-only. If logs and traces need to land in the same place, narrow to the unified platforms.

A note on pricing: we do not quote list prices for any vendor. Figures go stale, and the number matters less than the shape. For each tool we describe what makes the bill grow and link the official pricing page so you can model your own volumes.

Methodology

How we evaluated Prometheus alternatives

The shortlist was assembled from the tools practitioners actually name when Prometheus hits its limits: vendor comparison pages from Dash0, Last9, OpenObserve, Logit.io and AppSignal, plus community threads on r/sre and r/devops where operators report running these systems in production. We required every entry to be a credible answer to at least one of the three Prometheus pain points - retention and scale, operational burden, or missing signals - and to be actively maintained as of October 2026.

PromQL and ecosystem compatibility carries the most weight because it determines migration cost, which is where most Prometheus replacement projects stall. Scale, cardinality and retention handling comes next, since that is the pain that starts the search, followed closely by operational burden. Signals beyond metrics, cost predictability and default collection resolution round out the scoring.

Vendor 01 / 10 · #netdata

01

Netdata

Per-second, zero-configuration infrastructure monitoring that replaces the scrape-config, TSDB and rule-file assembly with one agent carrying metrics, logs and traces.

Netdata metrics dashboard showing per-second infrastructure metric charts with automatic anomaly highlighting, illustrating the resolution and zero-configuration collection that replace a Prometheus scrape-and-store stack

Best for

  • Teams replacing the Prometheus-plus-Grafana-plus-Alertmanager assembly with one auto-configuring agent and a fleet view
  • SREs who want per-second resolution during incidents instead of 30-60s scrape gaps
  • Organizations that want ML anomaly detection and pre-configured alerts out of the box rather than authoring PromQL rules

Pricing

  • Per-node pricing: Netdata Cloud Business starts at $4.5/node/month on annual plans, and the per-node price decreases as node count grows
  • Agents are open source under GPLv3+ and free to self-host; Community plan is free for personal, non-commercial use with up to 5 active connected nodes
  • Not billed: metrics volume, Logs Monitoring (querying logs in place), users, data retention, containers; Logs Management is in Free Preview
  • Netdata Cloud Business has a 14-day trial for teams evaluating it against a Prometheus stack

Pros

  • Per-second metric collection by default, versus Prometheus’s typical 30-60s scrape interval - materially better visibility during fast-moving incidents
  • Auto-detects and monitors thousands of metrics per node with no per-exporter configuration, replacing scrape-config maintenance
  • Genuine Prometheus interop: scrapes Prometheus endpoints including Kubernetes annotation discovery, exposes its own metrics in Prometheus format, and remote-writes to Prometheus-compatible stores
  • Unsupervised ML anomaly detection runs on the node, with raw telemetry staying on your infrastructure
  • Metrics, logs and traces on the same agent; OpenTelemetry traces ingested over OTLP and explored in the Netdata Cloud Traces tab
  • Predictable per-node pricing that does not grow with metric volume, cardinality or users

Cons

  • Netdata does not implement PromQL: large estates of PromQL dashboards, recording rules and alert rules cannot lift-and-shift - teams either rewrite in Netdata’s model or keep a Prometheus-compatible store for that workload
  • Not a drop-in long-term TSDB for an existing Prometheus fleet; if the only problem is retention and HA for servers you keep unchanged, Thanos, Mimir or VictoriaMetrics solve that specific job more directly
  • Exploring traces and logs in the dashboard requires a Netdata Cloud sign-in

Verdict

Netdata ranks first because it fixes the things Prometheus buyers actually complain about: a typical 30-60s scrape interval becomes per-second collection, the scrape-config and rule-file assembly becomes one auto-configuring agent, and blank alerting becomes on-node ML anomaly detection with pre-configured alerts. It is not a walled garden - it scrapes Prometheus endpoints, exposes Prometheus-format metrics and remote-writes into Prometheus-compatible stores, so it slots into existing ecosystems either as a replacement or alongside them. The honest caveat is PromQL: if your operational muscle memory lives in PromQL queries and shared dashboards, Netdata is a replacement for the collection and storage stack, not for the query language. Teams in that position pair it with a compatible store or choose one from the ranks below.

Vendor 02 / 10 · #victoriametrics

02

VictoriaMetrics

The most-cited self-hosted answer when Prometheus hits cardinality, compression or retention limits, with PromQL-compatible queries and remote-write ingestion.

Best for

  • Teams self-hosting that need long retention and high cardinality with fewer resources than Prometheus or Mimir
  • Platform teams replacing Prometheus wholesale while keeping PromQL-style queries and Grafana dashboards
  • Cost-sensitive organizations at large series counts

Pricing

  • Open source (Apache-2.0 core) and self-hosted - you operate it, and the bill grows with the hardware, storage and cluster components you provision
  • VictoriaMetrics Cloud uses capacity-tier pricing: a fixed compute tier plus storage, with egress charged per GB
  • Enterprise licensing adds multi-tenancy, retention controls and SLAs at custom pricing

Pros

  • MetricsQL is a PromQL-compatible superset, so most existing queries, Grafana dashboards and vmalert rules carry over
  • Accepts Prometheus remote write; vmagent can scrape Prometheus endpoints directly, so collection barely changes
  • Widely reported substantially better compression and resource efficiency than Prometheus TSDB at scale across independent 2026 comparisons
  • Handles churning, high-cardinality Kubernetes series more gracefully than Prometheus
  • Single-node and clustered versions, actively maintained, with a managed cloud escape hatch

Cons

  • Metrics-only: logs and traces need separate tools, so the single-signal gap Prometheus has remains
  • Self-hosting the cluster version still means operating multiple components and storage yourself
  • Smaller ecosystem than Prometheus; some niche exporters and tooling assume vanilla Prometheus behavior

Verdict

VictoriaMetrics is the strongest self-hosted drop-in for Prometheus’s storage and query weaknesses, and the name that comes up first in operator threads about leaving Prometheus TSDB behind. Migration from Prometheus is about as gentle as it gets: point remote_write at it or swap in vmagent, and your PromQL queries and Grafana dashboards keep working through MetricsQL. What it does not fix is scope - it is a metrics store, not a unified platform, so logs and traces remain separate projects. If your problem is Prometheus at scale and you want to keep everything else about your stack, start here.

Vendor 03 / 10 · #grafana-mimir

03

Grafana Mimir

Grafana Labs’ horizontally scalable, multi-tenant long-term storage for Prometheus, self-hosted under AGPLv3 or managed through Grafana Cloud.

Best for

  • Large enterprises running metrics as a multi-tenant internal platform
  • Teams already in the Grafana ecosystem wanting one vendor for metrics, logs (Loki) and traces (Tempo)
  • Organizations that prefer a managed Prometheus-compatible backend via Grafana Cloud over operating one

Pricing

  • Open source (AGPLv3) and self-hosted - the bill grows with Kubernetes capacity and S3-compatible object storage
  • Grafana Cloud managed option is usage-based: metrics billed per active series, logs and traces per GB, plus per-user charges
  • Grafana Enterprise Metrics adds commercial support and large-scale features at custom pricing

Pros

  • Native PromQL and Prometheus remote write; existing recording rules and Grafana dashboards work unchanged
  • Strongest multi-tenancy of the Prometheus-compatible stores, with per-tenant isolation and limits
  • Backed by Grafana Labs with very active development, and a natural pairing with Loki and Tempo for the other signals
  • Object-storage-backed long-term retention with downsampling
  • Managed path via Grafana Cloud removes the operational burden entirely

Cons

  • AGPLv3 license can block some commercial embedding and redistribution scenarios
  • Microservices architecture with many components; self-hosted deployments need real platform-team capacity and object storage
  • Reported higher baseline resource usage than VictoriaMetrics at equivalent scale in vendor and community benchmarks

Verdict

Mimir is the right answer when the problem is scale plus multi-tenancy for Prometheus metrics and the team already lives in Grafana. Moving from Prometheus is a remote_write block and an object storage bucket - PromQL, alerts and dashboards carry over unchanged. The trade-offs are operational weight if you self-host, a license some legal teams will flag, and a metrics-only scope in the open-source edition unless you bring Loki and Tempo along. Grafana Cloud is the escape hatch, priced per active series, which rewards cardinality discipline.

Vendor 04 / 10 · #thanos

04

Thanos

CNCF Incubating project that bolts long-term storage, HA and a global query view onto the Prometheus servers you already run, via sidecar and object storage.

Best for

  • Teams with an existing fleet of Prometheus servers that want long-term storage and a global view without changing collection
  • Organizations that value minimal migration risk and CNCF-governed, vendor-neutral components
  • Environments already committed to S3-compatible object storage

Pricing

  • Open source (Apache-2.0) and self-hosted only - you run and operate it
  • The bill grows with object storage, sidecar/querier/compactor compute, and the Prometheus fleet itself
  • No first-party managed offering; managed options exist only through third parties

Pros

  • Least invasive adoption path: a sidecar attaches to existing Prometheus servers with no re-instrumentation or query rewrite
  • Object-store-backed long-term retention with downsampling
  • Global queries across all Prometheus instances via Thanos Querier
  • CNCF Incubating with vendor-neutral governance, battle-tested at very large scale in community reports

Cons

  • Adds several components (sidecar, store gateway, compactor, querier, ruler) that you must operate and scale
  • Metrics-only; logs and traces remain separate problems
  • Query performance at global scale depends heavily on object storage tuning

Verdict

Thanos answers one specific question better than anything else on this list: how do I keep Prometheus exactly as it is and add retention, HA and a global view? Nothing about collection changes, which makes it the lowest-risk move on the page. The cost is operational surface area - you are now running a distributed system alongside Prometheus, forever, with no managed first-party option. Teams that want the same outcome with fewer moving parts usually end up comparing it against Mimir or VictoriaMetrics instead.

Vendor 05 / 10 · #datadog

05

Datadog

The incumbent managed observability platform: infrastructure, APM, logs, RUM and synthetics in one SaaS, with Prometheus remote-write ingestion for teams leaving self-hosted metrics.

Best for

  • Teams that want to stop operating any monitoring infrastructure at all
  • Enterprises needing APM, logs, RUM, synthetics and security from one vendor with one support line
  • Organizations with budget tolerance for the most complete managed platform

Pricing

  • Per-product, per-dimension billing: per-host for infrastructure and APM, per-GB for log ingestion plus a separate indexing charge, per-session for RUM
  • Custom metrics are allocated per host; exceeding the allocation grows the bill
  • Annual commitments discount per-host rates; multi-product estates compound quickly

Pros

  • Broadest managed product surface on this list: infra, APM, logs, RUM, synthetics and security in one platform
  • Ingests Prometheus metrics via remote write and OpenTelemetry via OTLP, so existing telemetry can flow in during migration
  • 900+ vendor integrations and mature out-of-the-box dashboards
  • APM depth including continuous profiling, which metrics-first tools do not offer

Cons

  • The bill grows on many independent dimensions (hosts, log GB, indexed logs, custom metrics, RUM sessions), making costs hard to predict - a frequent reason teams evaluate alternatives in the first place
  • PromQL is not the query language; existing PromQL dashboards and alert rules must be rewritten
  • SaaS-only: telemetry leaves your infrastructure, which matters for sovereignty-sensitive buyers

Verdict

Datadog is a genuine Prometheus alternative when the real goal is to stop running monitoring infrastructure entirely and buy unified coverage instead. Moving from Prometheus is mechanically easy at the collection layer - remote write and OTLP are both first-class - but the PromQL estate does not come with you; queries and rules get rewritten. The trade is operational relief for a bill that grows on several axes at once, which is exactly the surprise that sends some teams back toward self-hosting. Model your volumes on the pricing page before committing.

Vendor 06 / 10 · #signoz

06

SigNoz

Open-source, OpenTelemetry-native observability platform on ClickHouse that unifies metrics, logs and traces, supports PromQL, and offers a usage-based cloud.

Best for

  • Teams that want a Datadog-class unified platform they can self-host
  • OpenTelemetry-first organizations adopting traces and logs alongside metrics
  • Buyers who want PromQL compatibility plus APM in one open-source product

Pricing

  • Open source and self-hosted - you run and operate ClickHouse plus the SigNoz components
  • SigNoz Cloud is usage-based: per-GB ingested for logs and traces, per-sample billing for metrics, with a monthly platform minimum
  • Bill grows with ingest volume and metric sample count, not host count

Pros

  • Full PromQL support and Prometheus remote read per SigNoz docs, easing migration of metrics workflows
  • Metrics, logs, traces and exceptions in one product, built on ClickHouse for fast queries
  • OpenTelemetry-native collection; no proprietary agent required
  • APM features including tracing and service-level views that pure metrics stores lack

Cons

  • Younger and less battle-tested at very large scale than the Prometheus-derived stores
  • Self-hosted deployment means operating ClickHouse, a real operational commitment
  • Advanced query work beyond the visual layer moves to ClickHouse SQL, its own dialect to learn

Verdict

SigNoz is the strongest open-source answer for teams whose Prometheus exit is really about unifying signals, not just scaling metrics. It keeps PromQL working for the metrics you bring over while adding tracing and logs through OpenTelemetry, all in a product you can run yourself. Migration from Prometheus is eased by the PromQL and remote-read support, though deep log and trace queries eventually mean learning ClickHouse SQL. Scale references are thinner than for VictoriaMetrics or Mimir, so very large fleets should validate with a proof of concept.

Vendor 07 / 10 · #newrelic

07

New Relic

Managed full-stack observability with a usage-based ingest model and an official Prometheus remote-write endpoint - one of the easiest paid landing spots for existing Prometheus metrics.

Best for

  • Teams that want managed full-stack observability with per-GB costs rather than per-host
  • Organizations with existing Prometheus fleets that want to forward metrics without re-instrumenting
  • Startups and mid-market teams testing on the free monthly ingest allowance

Pricing

  • Usage-based: a free monthly data-ingest allowance, then per-GB for all telemetry beyond it
  • Per-user seat pricing on top of ingest, with a free user tier and paid seat tiers
  • Bill grows with total GB ingested across metrics, logs, traces and events, plus user count

Pros

  • Official Prometheus remote-write integration; per New Relic docs, one YAML block forwards an existing server’s metrics
  • Single ingest meter across metrics, logs, traces and events simplifies cost modeling versus per-product billing
  • Mature APM, distributed tracing and dashboards in one SaaS
  • OpenTelemetry support alongside Prometheus ingestion

Cons

  • PromQL is not the query language; queries move to NRQL and dashboards and rules must be rewritten
  • Per-GB ingest means high-cardinality or high-volume metrics directly grow the bill
  • SaaS-only, with no self-hosted option for sovereignty-sensitive buyers

Verdict

New Relic earns its rank on migration friction: of the managed platforms, its first-party Prometheus remote-write endpoint is the simplest way to get an existing fleet’s metrics into a SaaS without touching exporters. The single per-GB meter is easier to reason about than per-product billing, though it punishes cardinality the way Prometheus TSDB does, just on the invoice instead of the disk. The PromQL estate rewrites to NRQL, and there is no self-hosted path. A solid paid landing spot; a poor fit if PromQL or data residency are non-negotiable.

Vendor 08 / 10 · #openobserve

08

OpenObserve

Single-binary open-source observability platform for logs, metrics, traces and RUM that ingests Prometheus remote write and queries metrics with PromQL or SQL.

Best for

  • Teams wanting a lightweight self-hosted unified platform without operating ClickHouse or a microservices mesh
  • Log-heavy organizations adding Prometheus metrics into the same store
  • Cost-conscious buyers comparing per-GB cloud observability

Pricing

  • Open source and self-hosted - you run and operate it; a commercial self-hosted Enterprise edition adds commercial features
  • OpenObserve Cloud is usage-based: per-GB ingested plus per-GB queried, with retention extensions priced per GB
  • Bill grows with ingest volume and query load, not hosts or seats

Pros

  • Accepts Prometheus remote write per vendor docs, so an existing scrape setup can point at it without exporter changes
  • Queries metrics with PromQL or SQL, including joins across telemetry
  • Single-binary deployment is markedly simpler to stand up than Mimir, Thanos or SigNoz stacks
  • Unified logs, metrics, traces and RUM in one product

Cons

  • Much younger than the Prometheus-derived stores, with fewer very-large-scale production references
  • Metrics feature depth such as recording rules and alerting maturity trails dedicated TSDBs
  • Cloud per-GB query charges can surprise teams with heavy dashboard usage

Verdict

OpenObserve is the pragmatic pick for teams that have outgrown single-node Prometheus but do not want to assemble Thanos plus Loki plus Tempo. Moving from Prometheus is a remote_write change, and PromQL keeps working alongside SQL for cross-signal queries, so exporters and service discovery stay put. Its simplicity is the selling point and its youth is the risk: metrics depth and alerting maturity trail the dedicated stores, and large-scale references are still accumulating. Best suited to log-heavy teams who want metrics in the same lightweight store.

InfluxDB

Purpose-built time-series database for high-write metrics workloads, with open-source Core, commercial Enterprise and usage-based Cloud editions - but no PromQL.

Best for

  • Teams whose primary need is a high-write time-series database rather than a Prometheus replacement
  • IoT, edge and industrial workloads already invested in Telegraf
  • Developers who prefer SQL over PromQL for metrics analysis

Pricing

  • InfluxDB 3 Core is open source (MIT/Apache-2) and self-hosted, positioned as a recent-data engine
  • Enterprise adds clustering and commercial features at custom pricing
  • Cloud Serverless is usage-based across data in, query count, storage and data out

Pros

  • Purpose-built storage engine for high-write time-series and event data
  • SQL-based querying familiar to analytics teams
  • Mature Telegraf agent ecosystem with hundreds of input plugins
  • Managed Cloud Serverless and single-tenant Cloud Dedicated options

Cons

  • No PromQL: existing Prometheus queries, recording rules and alert rules must be rewritten in SQL or InfluxQL
  • Open-source Core is positioned for recent data with a short query window; long retention and HA are commercial editions
  • Not a monitoring platform: dashboards, alerting and APM require pairing with other tools

Verdict

InfluxDB shows up in every Prometheus-alternatives discussion because it is a serious time-series engine, but it is the weakest fit on this list for a classic Prometheus exit. There is no PromQL path, so migration from Prometheus means rewriting every query and re-pointing collection through Telegraf or OpenTelemetry; some Grafana dashboards can be rebuilt against it as a data source, not carried over. Choose it when the workload is high-write telemetry and the team thinks in SQL - IoT and industrial buyers in particular. For Kubernetes infrastructure monitoring with an existing PromQL estate, look higher on the list.

Vendor 10 / 10 · #chronosphere

Chronosphere

Single-tenant managed observability built by the creators of Uber’s M3, natively compatible with Prometheus remote write, PromQL and OpenTelemetry, priced on persisted writes.

Best for

  • Large cloud-native engineering organizations that have outgrown self-managed Prometheus at serious scale
  • Teams needing Prometheus compatibility plus aggressive cost control over telemetry volume
  • Enterprises wanting a single-tenant SaaS with a strong data-control posture

Pricing

  • Enterprise SaaS, contact-sales only; no public price list
  • Billed on persisted writes - the data points actually stored after aggregation - not raw ingest, so upstream aggregation reduces the bill
  • A separate Telemetry Pipeline product is priced on raw data throughput

Pros

  • Native Prometheus remote-write, PromQL and OTLP ingestion; per the vendor, existing recording rules and Grafana dashboards import without modification
  • M3 heritage from Uber’s metrics platform, proven at very large scale
  • Persisted-writes pricing actively rewards aggregation and cardinality control
  • Single-tenant SaaS architecture, now backed by Palo Alto Networks

Cons

  • No public pricing and an enterprise-only sales motion that excludes smaller teams
  • SaaS-only; no self-hosted edition
  • Aggregation-first model requires discipline about what is stored, which can surprise teams expecting raw-data retention

Verdict

Chronosphere is the premium enterprise answer to managed Prometheus at scale. Compatibility is the best of the managed group - per the vendor, PromQL, recording rules and Grafana dashboards import unmodified - so migration from Prometheus is mostly about adopting its aggregation and retention policies rather than rewriting your estate. The persisted-writes billing model is genuinely interesting because it makes cardinality control financially visible instead of just operationally painful. The catch is access: contact-sales pricing and an enterprise motion put it out of reach for most of the teams reading this list.
