Buyer’s Guide - October 2026

The 10 best SNMP monitoring tools, ranked

Routers, switches and firewalls do not take agents, so SNMP polling and traps are how you see them. This ranking grades ten SNMP network monitoring tools on protocol depth (v1/v2c/v3, traps, MIBs), device auto-discovery and profile libraries, polling resolution, alerting, and what actually makes the bill grow. Every tool here was checked against its own documentation, not vendor marketing.

The 10 best SNMP monitoring tools, ranked product interface

Why this list exists

SNMP monitoring is the discipline of polling device OIDs (interfaces, CPU, temperature, errors) and receiving traps from equipment you cannot install an agent on. The category is dominated by dedicated network management systems built around discovery, device templates and topology, and buyers make two classic mistakes. The first is picking a general APM that merely “can” speak SNMP, or a graphing-only tool that polls but barely alerts. The second is assuming the biggest brand has the deepest SNMP support. Template and profile libraries differ enormously between tools, and that library is what decides whether your new switch model charts itself or sits unmonitored while you hand-write OIDs.

Three dimensions decide the outcome more than any feature checklist:

  1. Protocol depth and resolution. v1/v2c/v3, trap reception, MIB handling and bulk polling are table stakes for a real SNMP monitor. What separates tools is polling interval: most NMS defaults sit at 5 minutes, which hides transient errors and counter wraps, while a few tools poll at 10 seconds or faster.
  2. Discovery and device profiles. Auto-discovery via CDP/LLDP/ARP/sysObjectID matched to a vendor profile library is what makes a thousand-device rollout survivable. Manual OID configuration per device does not scale past a handful of switches.
  3. Pricing shape. Sensors, devices, nodes, edition tiers: every model bills against a different unit, and the unit decides whether your bill triples when you monitor every port on a switch stack.

We do not quote competitor list prices on this page. Vendor pricing changes, is frequently quote-based, and a stale number is worse than none. Instead we describe each pricing shape and link the official pricing page so you can get a current quote. For the wider picture beyond SNMP, see our best network monitoring tools ranking, which hands off SNMP-specific intent to this page, and the network monitoring runbooks for operator-level setup guides.

Methodology

How we evaluated SNMP monitoring tools

We assembled the shortlist from the tools that network engineers actually shortlist: the dedicated NMS products (PRTG, SolarWinds, OpManager, WhatsUp Gold), the open-source stalwarts (Zabbix, LibreNMS, Observium), the open-core options with real SNMP support (Checkmk, Nagios XI), and Netdata, whose SNMP collector covers discovery, traps and device profiles alongside its server and container monitoring.

Protocol depth and device coverage carry the most weight (45% combined) because they decide whether the tool monitors your actual hardware without manual OID work. Collection resolution and alerting carry 30%, because polling that misses transient events and dashboards that never alert are graphing, not monitoring. Scalability, pricing model and deployment effort make up the rest.

Vendor 01 / 10 · #netdata

01

Netdata

Per-second infrastructure observability whose SNMP collector adds auto-discovered, vendor-profiled device monitoring with traps, ML anomaly detection and alerting, on the same agent that watches your servers and containers.

Netdata Cloud Nodes tab filtered to network devices, showing auto-discovered SNMP devices grouped by status with their live health and alerts

Best for

  • Teams that want SNMP devices and the servers and containers around them in one per-second platform
  • SREs who want ML anomaly detection and pre-configured alerts on interface, CPU and error counters without writing thresholds
  • Organizations that want telemetry stored on their own infrastructure

Pricing

  • Per-node pricing: Netdata Cloud Business starts at $4.5/node/month on annual plans, and the per-node price decreases as node count grows
  • The Agent is open source (GPLv3+) and self-hosted; the Community plan is free for personal, non-commercial use with up to 5 active connected nodes, and businesses use the open-source Agent or Netdata Cloud Business (14-day trial)
  • Not billed: metrics volume, Logs Monitoring (querying logs in place), users, data retention, containers
  • Logs Management and Traces are in Free Preview on the current price list

Pros

  • SNMP v1, v2c and v3 with full USM authentication and privacy (MD5, SHA through SHA-512, AES-128 through AES-256), plus SNMPv3 context support
  • Automatic device discovery matched to 100+ built-in vendor profiles via sysObjectID and sysDescr, with custom profiles for extra OIDs
  • Default 10-second SNMP polling, and per-second polling where the device can sustain it, against the 5-minute defaults of most NMS tools
  • SNMP trap reception documented as a first-class feature, catching transient transitions polling would miss
  • Unsupervised ML anomaly detection and alerting run on the node for SNMP metrics, the same as every other metric
  • One agent also covers servers, containers, Kubernetes, logs and OpenTelemetry traces, plus NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX and LLDP/CDP topology maps, so network and compute health sit in one fleet view

Where teams pair it

  • Its 100+ vendor device profiles cover common hardware plus BGP, LLDP and CDP, but the template libraries of long-established NMS tools such as LibreNMS and Zabbix are broader for uncommon devices and deep vendor-specific MIBs (OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS)
  • Network configuration and change management (config backup, diff and compliance) is out of scope; teams that need it pair Netdata with a dedicated NCM tool

Verdict

Netdata leads this list because it gets the fundamentals right and then goes somewhere no dedicated NMS does. Full SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with USM, discovery matched to vendor profiles, trap reception, and 10-second default polling put it ahead of tools polling at 5-minute defaults. Those SNMP metrics get the same per-second charts, ML anomaly detection and alerting as every other metric, and sit next to the servers, containers, logs and traces the network serves. Per-node pricing avoids the sensor-count and per-device cost models below. The honest caveats: the device profile library is younger than Zabbix’s or LibreNMS’s for exotic hardware, and network config management is a separate tool’s job.

Vendor 02 / 10 · #prtg

02

Paessler PRTG Network Monitor

Windows-based all-in-one monitor whose sensor model makes SNMP polling, traps and bandwidth sensing approachable for small and mid-size networks.

Best for

  • Windows-centric IT teams that want a fast, GUI-driven setup
  • Small to mid-size networks where the sensor model is easy to reason about
  • Admins who want SNMP, bandwidth, uptime and server checks in one product

Pricing

  • Subscription licensed in sensor-count bundles; every interface or OID you watch can consume sensors, so the bill grows with monitored elements
  • A limited free edition capped by sensor count exists for evaluation and tiny setups
  • Users on r/networking report steep bundle price increases in 2024, so quote carefully at renewal

Pros

  • Native SNMP polling, an SNMP trap receiver and SNMP library sensors with MIB support built in
  • Auto-discovery of network devices on first install
  • The most approachable UI in the category, with out-of-the-box dashboards and maps
  • Broad sensor catalog beyond SNMP: ping, HTTP, bandwidth, VMware, cloud

Cons

  • Sensor-based licensing makes large switch stacks with many interfaces expensive; the bill grows with every monitored element
  • Windows-only core as a single server; very large networks mean extra probes and careful sensor budgeting
  • Default scanning interval is minutes-scale, so short transient events can hide between polls

Verdict

PRTG is the friendliest full SNMP stack here: polling, traps, MIBs and discovery all work out of the box, and the UI is genuinely good. For a Windows shop monitoring a few hundred elements, it is the fastest path to useful dashboards. The catch is the sensor model. Monitoring every port on a switch stack consumes sensors fast, and bundle pricing has climbed, so large networks outgrow it on cost before they outgrow it on features.

Vendor 03 / 10 · #zabbix

03

Zabbix

Enterprise-class open-source monitoring with one of the deepest SNMP template libraries in the industry, covering polling, traps and MIBs at scale.

Best for

  • Teams with Linux and database skills who want no license fees and full control
  • Large, heterogeneous networks that benefit from the huge community template library
  • Organizations needing low-level, scriptable monitoring with custom triggers

Pricing

  • Open source under AGPLv3: self-hosted, you run and operate it, with no license fee
  • Optional paid support subscriptions priced by quote based on response coverage and commitments
  • The real cost is your servers, database tuning and administration time

Pros

  • Full SNMP support: v1/v2c/v3 polling, SNMP trap items with fallback collection, and MIB files for textual OIDs
  • Large official and community template repository for switches, routers and firewalls
  • Low-level discovery of interfaces with dynamic item creation
  • Scales to very large environments with proxies and distributed monitoring

Cons

  • Steep learning curve: triggers, items and templates require real configuration work, as r/networking practitioners note
  • Trap setup depends on external scripts or SNMPTT and is fiddly on modern systems
  • No native flow analysis (NetFlow/sFlow)
  • Functional rather than modern UI; dashboards take effort

Verdict

Zabbix is arguably the deepest open-source SNMP coverage available, and its template library for uncommon hardware is the benchmark Netdata’s younger profile set is chasing. The trade is operational weight: you assemble triggers, templates and trap handling yourself, and the database needs care at scale. If you have the ops capacity, it is a superb choice. If you do not, the same engineers who recommend it will warn you about the setup curve.

Vendor 04 / 10 · #librenms

04

LibreNMS

Fully open-source, SNMP-first network monitoring with the best auto-discovery in the category: polling, traps and alerting in Observium’s forked lineage.

Best for

  • Network engineers who want automatic discovery of the whole network with minimal licensing friction
  • Teams comfortable self-hosting a PHP/MySQL stack
  • Organizations wanting SNMP polling, traps and alerting without per-device fees

Pricing

  • Open source (GPLv3), self-hosted: you run and operate it, no license fee
  • Optional commercial support and distributed poller services from project partners
  • Operating cost is poller hardware and administration; distributed pollers for scale

Pros

  • Automatic discovery of the entire network using CDP, FDP, LLDP, OSPF, BGP, SNMP and ARP
  • SNMP polling and SNMP trap handlers included
  • Flexible alerting rules engine with many transport integrations
  • Distributed pollers for multi-site scale, plus billing and traffic accounting features

Cons

  • Default polling is 5-minute based, missing transient events; 1-minute polling needs extra configuration and poller capacity
  • You own upgrades, database tuning and poller maintenance
  • Utilitarian UI and charting next to modern observability platforms
  • Discovery runs on a 6-hour cycle by default, so new devices are not watched instantly

Verdict

LibreNMS is purpose-built for SNMP network monitoring and its auto-discovery is the strongest on this list. Point it at a network and it maps devices, links and routing neighbors on its own. The limits are resolution and scope: 5-minute default polling misses what per-second tools catch, and it covers network devices, not the compute behind them. For a network-team-owned, self-hosted NMS, it remains the default recommendation; the license savings go straight into poller hardware and administration time.

Vendor 05 / 10 · #solarwinds-npm

05

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

Long-established commercial NMS with strong SNMP polling, trap alerting and multi-vendor device support, aimed at mid-size and enterprise networks.

Best for

  • Mid-size and enterprise network teams wanting a mature, purpose-built NMS
  • Organizations needing multi-vendor device support with polished out-of-the-box dashboards
  • Buyers who want vendor support and SLAs

Pricing

  • Quote-based commercial licensing priced by node count, in perpetual and subscription forms
  • The bill grows with monitored nodes, and add-on modules (NetFlow, NCM, VMAN) are licensed separately
  • 30-day fully functional free trial

Pros

  • Polls SNMP devices for availability, performance and network health from a centralized interface
  • Automatic device discovery and dynamic, interactive dashboards, which DNSStuff ranks first among SNMP managers
  • SNMP trap alerting and deep multi-vendor device coverage
  • Large add-on ecosystem (flow analysis, config management) that integrates with NPM

Cons

  • Quote-based per-node licensing plus separately licensed add-ons makes total cost opaque and fast-growing with network size
  • Self-hosted Windows server deployment with its own database to maintain
  • Minutes-scale polling by default rather than per-second

Verdict

SolarWinds NPM is one of the most complete commercial SNMP stacks, especially once you add its flow and config modules, and its discovery and dashboards are polished. It earns its enterprise reputation on capability. The reservations are commercial and architectural: quote-based pricing with separately licensed modules makes the real total hard to forecast, and you are running a Windows server with a database either way.

Vendor 06 / 10 · #opmanager

06

ManageEngine OpManager

Commercial network monitoring platform with SNMP-based discovery, performance monitors and asynchronous trap handling, popular with mid-market IT teams.

Best for

  • Mid-market IT teams wanting per-device pricing that is easier to forecast than sensor models
  • Shops wanting discovery, SNMP performance monitors and trap handling out of the box
  • Organizations already using other ManageEngine products

Pricing

  • Commercial per-device licensing in tiered editions (Standard/Professional/Enterprise); the bill grows with device count and edition
  • A limited free edition capped by device count exists for very small deployments
  • Add-ons (NetFlow, firewall log analysis, config management) are licensed separately

Pros

  • SNMP performance monitoring for availability, performance and fault management of network devices
  • Automatic discovery across a wide variety of devices
  • Asynchronous SNMP trap messaging for fault information
  • Switch/port and interface-level monitoring with maps and out-of-the-box reports

Cons

  • Edition tiers gate features like flow analysis and WAN monitoring, so the entry price understates full-functionality cost
  • Self-hosted Windows/Linux server with its own database
  • r/sysadmin practitioners report mixed usability experiences at scale
  • 5-minute default polling rather than per-second

Verdict

OpManager delivers complete, classic SNMP coverage at a mid-market posture: discovery, monitors, traps and reports with per-device licensing that is easier to reason about than PRTG’s sensors. It slots neatly into shops already running ManageEngine. Watch the edition gating, since flow analysis and WAN features sit above the entry tier, and expect a self-hosted footprint to maintain.

Vendor 07 / 10 · #checkmk

07

Checkmk

Open-core infrastructure monitor whose SNMP support uses curated vendor device packs to auto-configure the right OIDs for network devices.

Best for

  • Teams that want server and network device monitoring in one check-based system
  • Organizations that value automatic OID selection via device packs over manual MIB work
  • Mixed estates of servers, appliances and network gear

Pricing

  • Open core: Raw Edition is open source and self-hosted; Enterprise editions are subscription-priced per host
  • The bill grows with monitored hosts and edition level
  • The status of the free enterprise variant for small personal deployments has been a recurring community concern, so confirm entitlements before committing

Pros

  • Monitors availability and performance of network devices via SNMP regardless of infrastructure size
  • Automatically filters and selects the right OIDs during discovery, reducing configuration errors
  • Vendor device packs for switches, routers and firewalls
  • Strong alerting and rule engine inherited from its Nagios lineage

Cons

  • SNMP is one capability inside a broader host-checking model; network-specific features (topology maps, flow analysis) are thinner than dedicated NMS tools
  • Edition split puts some scalability and automation features behind Enterprise
  • Check cycle is minutes-scale (1-minute default in Enterprise), not per-second

Verdict

Checkmk’s SNMP story is smarter than it first looks: device packs auto-select the right OIDs during discovery, which removes the most error-prone part of SNMP setup. As a single system for servers and network gear, it is a strong pick. As a pure NMS it trails the dedicated tools on topology and flow, and the open-core split means the edition question follows you into every feature discussion.

Vendor 08 / 10 · #observium

08

Observium

SNMP-first network observation platform with elegant auto-discovered graphs, distributed in Community and paid Professional/Enterprise editions.

Best for

  • Network engineers who want clean, zero-configuration device graphs
  • Small networks served well by the Community Edition
  • Teams preferring an SNMP-polling specialist over a general-purpose monitor

Pricing

  • Community Edition is open source (QPL) on a roughly 6-monthly release cycle
  • Professional and Enterprise are paid annual subscriptions with daily updates; Enterprise adds support hours
  • Operating cost is your poller and administration

Pros

  • Automatic discovery and graphing of SNMP devices with minimal configuration
  • Clean, well-regarded UI for network device health and traffic
  • Professional/Enterprise editions receive daily security and bug fixes

Cons

  • Community Edition updates arrive only every 6 to 12 months and the vendor positions it for small, non-critical deployments, home use and evaluation
  • Alerting is weaker than LibreNMS, its fork, which added a far more flexible alerting system
  • No native trap-centric workflow or flow analysis comparable to commercial NMS add-ons
  • QPL license and SVN distribution complicate packaging and automation

Verdict

Observium does one thing beautifully: it discovers SNMP devices and draws excellent graphs with almost no configuration. For a small network or an evaluation, Community Edition is a quick win. For anything critical, the slow Community release cadence, lighter alerting and the absence of trap workflows push most teams toward LibreNMS (its own fork) or a commercial NMS.

Vendor 09 / 10 · #nagios-xi

09

Nagios XI

The commercial evolution of the 25-year-old Nagios Core engine, with SNMP monitoring and trap management via plugins and wizards.

Best for

  • Teams already invested in the Nagios plugin ecosystem
  • Organizations wanting a proven, supportable commercial wrapper around Nagios Core
  • Buyers who prefer perpetual licensing

Pricing

  • Perpetual licensing priced by monitored nodes (hosts), with services unlimited
  • Tiered node bands mean the bill steps up with network size, and support renewals add cost
  • Nagios Core remains open source (GPL) and self-hosted; you run and operate it yourself

Pros

  • Comprehensive SNMP monitoring via polling, backed by a dedicated solution and documentation
  • Dedicated SNMP trap management for real-time network incident events
  • Enormous plugin ecosystem for any device or check
  • Configuration wizards make SNMP setup easier than raw Nagios Core

Cons

  • Check-based, plugin-driven architecture: meaningful SNMP depth depends on the plugins and MIBs you assemble, not built-in device profiles
  • UI and reporting feel dated next to modern platforms
  • Minutes-scale check intervals by default

Verdict

Nagios XI can monitor SNMP well, but it is assemble-it-yourself: the depth you get depends on the plugins and MIBs you wire together, not on a profile library. Existing Nagios shops get real value from the wizards, trap management and commercial support. New buyers comparing profile-driven tools will find the same coverage with far less assembly elsewhere on this list.

WhatsUp Gold

Veteran Windows-based network monitor with SNMP discovery, real-time alerting and device-state automation, sold through quote-based device licensing.

Best for

  • Windows-centric IT teams wanting discovery-driven SNMP monitoring with maps
  • Organizations that value long-term vendor relationships and training
  • Buyers who want device-state automation actions tied to SNMP status changes

Pricing

  • Quote-based commercial licensing priced by monitored devices, in perpetual and subscription forms; reseller quotes vary widely
  • The bill grows with device count and add-on modules (flow, config, virtual)
  • Free trial available

Pros

  • Discovers devices, initiates monitoring and executes actions on device state changes
  • Real-time SNMP alerts and performance tracking
  • Layer-2/layer-3 network maps built from discovery
  • Long-established product with broad device support

Cons

  • Quote-only pricing with reseller variability makes budgeting hard
  • Self-hosted Windows deployment with its own SQL Server database
  • Modern observability features (ML anomaly detection, per-second resolution, OpenTelemetry) are absent
  • Minutes-scale polling by default

Verdict

WhatsUp Gold is dependable classic SNMP monitoring: discovery, maps, alerts and automation actions all work, and long-standing customers are loyal for a reason. For new deployments, though, the quote-only pricing, Windows self-hosting and an architecture without ML, per-second resolution or modern telemetry support put it behind the leaders. Evaluate it if your team is Windows-first and values the vendor relationship; otherwise start higher on the list.
