Metrics |
Unlimited
read more Netdata is not subject to cardinality limitations, thanks to its distributed design.
All the Netdata Agents and Parents (centralization points) you install, are transparently integrated to one uniform observability platform, capable of scaling both vertically and horizontally as your infrastructure grows. This design:
When viewing dashboards, queries are automatically split and spread to your Netdata Agents and Parents, each of which executes a small part of the original query, multiplying the compute power and providing faster responses than any single system can offer. Netdata is generally able to respond to composite single-chart queries involving several dozens of thousands of time-series. Queries that are usually rejected by other monitoring solutions. |
Limited
extra charges
System metrics collected by Datadog are significantly fewer compared to Netdata. On an empty VM, Datadog reports about 165 metrics, while Netdata reports 3k+.
For custom metrics, Datadog pricing includes up to 100 metrics per node in the Infrastructure Pro plan. Additional custom metrics are charged with:
+$4 per 100 metrics per month.
|
Limited
extra charges
Grafana charges $8 per month per 1k DPM (Data Points per Minute). For Prometheus metrics, the default resolution is 15-seconds, which results in 4 DPM per Prometheus time-series.
Assuming a conservative 500 time-series per node, 2k DPM per node are charged, which results to $16 per node per month.
Typically, Grafana offers significantly fewer system metrics compared to Netdata. The Grafana Agent on an empty Linux VM exposes 340 metrics, while Netdata offers 3k+.

Granularity |
1 seconds
read more Netdata collects all metrics at the best resolution they are available.
Our goal is to kill the console, eliminate the need to access the console for performance monitoring and troubleshooting. So, Netdata collects, stores and visualizes all the available metrics at the resolution the console tools provide (per-second). Furthermore, data collection to visualization latency in Netdata, is constant and less than 1 second. Unlike most other monitoring solutions that smooth out missed data collections, Netdata works at a beat. Missed data collections are presented as gaps at the charts. These gaps provide crucial information in virtualized and cloud environments where system resources availability may fluctuate or not be linear. |

Machine Learning |

read more Netdata trains multiple machine learning models for each time-series collected, learning the behavior of all metrics for the last few days. These models are then used to detect if newly collected samples are outliers (anomalies) or not.
Anomaly information is stored together with the samples, in the database. When querying metrics, Netdata calculates the anomaly rate of each query, based on the percentage of samples that were anomalous at collection time. Anomaly rates are used in:

Logs |

read more Netdata integrates with systemd-journal to query logs in real-time and provide logs dashboards for exploring and filtering log entries.
For systemd-journal logs centralization points, Netdata automatically provides aggregated, multi-node, logs dashboards, merging the logs of all servers into the same view. Netdata provides tools (log2journal and systemd-cat-native) for converting plain text log files, json log files and logfmt log files, into structured journal entries, taking advantage of the advanced indexing capabilities of systemd-journald. For systems with a steady and high rate of logs, Netdata uses dynamic and adaptive sampling mechanisms to provide prompt responses to logs queries, even when the log entries in the visible timeframe are dozens of millions. Note that Netdata can query the systemd-journal logs on all servers, without requiring a logs centralization point or a logs database. It queries the journal files, directly on disk. |

read more Netdata collects container information via kernel namespaces and cgroups.
It detects docker containers, kubernetes pods and containers, lxc containers, KVM VMs, libvirt VMs, Proxmox VMs, systemd services, and generally any kind of container technology that uses Linux kernel namespaces and cgroups. For each container detected, Netdata automatically collects additional metadata information from docker, kubernetes, etc. to enrich the labels of the metrics. It also transparently associates the relevant system components (like virtual network interfaces) to each container or VM, providing a wholistic view of all virtualized applications and systems running. |

The Homelab plan is eligible for home users and students that will not use Netdata under professional conditions. Some examples of exclusions: Monitoring a company’s or organization’s infrastructure, Providing services to customers for a fee, Using the service within a business or organizational context, Integrating Netdata into a product or service that is sold or offered for a fee.
To qualify for the Homelab plan you will need to self-certify your status as a home user or student when signing up for the plan. The plan will be regulated by the Fair Usage Policy.
If you have any questions or doubts about eligibility feel free to reach out to us for clarification.
The Netdata Community Free tier users have the following new limits:
Previous limits will still apply for:
Netdata won’t delete or remove any of the nodes or custom dashboards from your space(s). All will be there but users will have some of them defined as active and the rest as inactive (see questions below for more details).
If you upgrade back to a paid plan your space(s) will become fully functional again.
This depends on the domain in the app, so active connected nodes applies:
For the above, this means that at any point in time users will only be able to see or use these nodes. If your space has more than the limited nodes you will still be able to see them but you won’t be able to see metrics for them or use them on filters.
For Alert notifications or the Events feed you will still be able to see notifications and events from these nodes. The restriction will apply when you try to see more details on them, for example view the Alert Landing page with the chart showing the metrics and the alert.
Yes. When your free Business Trial ends, and you have more than 5 nodes connected to your Space, you’ll be prompted to select the active nodes.
If you change your mind you will be able to review the active nodes on the Space settings Nodes page but you’ll always only be able to have 5 active nodes at one point on your Space.
Yes but not directly. The rule applied to identify the active custom dashboard nodes is the latest updated dashboard on your room.
You delete this custom dashboard in your room, so the next latest updated one will become active.
When you subscribe to a Yearly plan, you will need to specify the number of nodes that you will commit to. On these nodes, a discounted price of 25% less than the monthly cost per node of the plan is applied, along with volume discounts based on the number of nodes that you commit. This amount will be part of your annual prepayment.
Node plan discounted price x committed nodes x 12 months
If, for a given month, your usage is over the number of committed nodes, you will be charged the monthly price per node for the nodes above the committed number.
No. We don’t charge for storage.
There’s not a lot of your data at Netdata. It only stores user management, agent management, custom dashboards, alert history, node events and user events related data.
When agents are online, we also maintain a summary of the metrics they collect so that the default dashboards can be rendered instantly and a summary of the alert checks they run.
All metrics data collected are maintained by the Netdata Agents you install at your premises. Netdata Agents allow you to build metric data centralization points (Netdata Agent Parents) as needed, and the more you have, the faster Netdata Cloud gets. To present dashboards we query all these Netdata Agents in real-time.
We don’t centralize metric data at Netdata Cloud. Instead, we transfer just a small amount of metadata to know which metrics each agent collects and maintains and which alerts have been configured. This is just a tiny fraction of the traffic required for transferring metric data.
Of course, we transfer metric data when you view them on a chart. But only when you view them.
No. Definitely not. For Netdata, overloading a server is a bug that needs to be addressed immediately.
Netdata has been designed to run on every server, container or IoT device and utilize the absolutely minimum of resources (CPU, memory, disk), resources which are usually already available and spare. We have designed it carefully and are always very keen on improving its resource consumption (check the PRs on Github). The Netdata Agent is also open-source, so you can check its code, its progress and the known issues about it.
Compared to other monitoring agents, Netdata is far more efficient in resources utilization.
At the same time, we provide many deployment options so that Netdata can be used for monitoring even the most sensitive or demanding services.
No. Users can create any number of spaces in any of the plans at the same time. Billing is per space.
For example, a user may have a Business space for work, a Community space for a home lab and a couple of Standalone agents, all at the same time. Or another user may have several Business spaces, one for each of their business partners, and a number of Community spaces for their friends, demos, and more.
For more details on what a space is please check our documentation page on Netdata Cloud Spaces.
Our goal is to simplify monitoring and at the same time make it more cost-efficient and significantly more effective for troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
Netdata is distributed. It scales to infinity horizontally, and the more distributed it is, the faster it gets. The trick is that metric data and their processing pipelines run at the Netdata agents you install at your premises, utilizing resources that are already available and spare.
Of course, you can have metrics centralization points within your network by configuring one or more Netdata Agents as parents (and we encourage our users to do this), but we don’t centralize the metrics data at Netdata Cloud. Think of Netdata Cloud as a controller of all your Netdata agents. It knows where the data are and is able to query and aggregate responses from multiple agents, to present real-time infrastructure and service level dashboards.
This drastically lowers the cost of processing, storing and querying metric data, while allowing Netdata to be high fidelity monitoring, compared to any other solution.
As a result, Netdata is more cost-efficient by design. Most of our cost is about providing convenience to you, as a user of the monitoring solution, by automating the setup process, providing meaningful fully automated dashboards, collecting the best knowledge about health alerts, tuning ML and building awesome AI assisted troubleshooting tools.
Yes. If you or your company have specific needs and restrictions that don’t allow you to use Netdata Cloud reach out to us and we will discuss with you the best setup for your use case.
